Despite a successful fund-raising effort to construct the Memorial in 1987, there were no funds left to ensure the perpetuity of the prominent Penns Landing structure. The Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial Advisory Fund, which provides oversight of the activities and maintenance of the Memorial in concert with the Fairmount Park System, has been forced over the years to solicit in piecemeal fashion funds for facility improvements and large-scale maintenance needs.
With an aging Vietnam veterans' population, time is running out to build a self-sustaining fund. The Memorial has incurred both man-made damage and significant harm from the elements. There is little doubt the Memorial will face ongoing structural damage that could threaten whether future generations will be able to see and recall the sacrifice of Philadelphians in that long and divisive war.
